The site chosen is located in the town of Frisco and encompasses a special character with a grade change to the west, a water course and tree line running through the site.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The program for this temple design project called for a 350-seat sanctuary, expandable to 1,200 for the High Holy Days. This temple design attempts to integrate the expansion space so that all congregants feel like they are an equal part of the worship community, regardless of where they are seated. Also included in the program was a small chapel, social hall, meeting rooms, and administrative offices. Read more here.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When the 500-family congregation of Temple Israel decided to move from Orlando to Longwood, they felt no historical ties to their 1950’s building, but rather seized the opportunity to create something altogether new, reflecting their spiritual identity and communal aspirations. At once graceful and bold, the new synagogue is a modern work of spiritual architecture, with ties to the biblical past; its undulating roofline complements the natural wooded terrain while connecting the congregation and the heavens.</image:caption>

As day moves into night, the pure light is muted, yet the sky itself is always visible—through the windows and through the ceiling’s celestial lighting pattern that includes randomly-spaced openings to mimic the stars. At any time of day, this is a peaceful, contemplative, and uplifiting space, conducive to authentic prayer. Read more here.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Temple Beth-El Jersey City</image:title>
<image:caption>Temple Beth-El in Jersey City is a young, growing congregation confronted with a building that was built in 1923 and designed for a more sanctuary-centric congregation with little to no educational and administrative space in an 18,000 square-foot structure. The needs of a synagogue today require a more culturally and educationally based facility. Understanding these needs, we inserted risers and balcony extensions within the original 11,000-square-foot sanctuary (950 occupants), allowing the auditorium to be resized to accommodate the 450 members maximum occupancy needed today.</image:caption>

The challenge was to build a temple that draws worshipers closer together, that invites spiritual reflection, and encourages the community aspirations of the congregation. It also needed to provide space for the growing educational program and community events.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sukkah City</image:title>
<image:caption>The Jewish tradition of Sukkot, with its mandatory creation of a temporary, nomadic structure called the sukkah, relies on the use of easily found materials and an understanding and respect for place and nature. Many nomadic tribes across the world have similar traditions, and in the Northeastern American context we find the Lenni Lenape tribe's longhouse. This Native American tribe was the primary indigenous people, from Connecticut to Delaware, and moved through this territory utilizing the longhouse as seasonal dwellings. The longhouse structure had many of the same attributes as the sukkah and Lenni Lenape seasonal travels could be seen as parallel to how the Jewish people wandered for 40 years in the dessert.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sukkah City</image:title>
<image:caption>In order to create a sukkah that is rooted in its local environment and culture, the Longhouse Sukkah utilizes accessible and standardized materials. While its form is inspired by the structure and construction methods of the Lenape Indians’ longhouse, it uses electrical conduit to mimic saplings the Lenni Lenape used, the grass rope or bark traditionally used for lashing is now replaced with cotton rope, and finally the pelt cover used for walls is transformed into ripstop fabric. All of these materials are durable, easily stored and reusable.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sukkah City - Sukkah^3</image:title>
<image:caption>Through the use of contemporary materials emulating traditional longhouse elements in tandem with vernacular forms altered to allow views of the sky, the Longhouse Sukkah blends the Jewish tradition of Sukkot with the vernacular building forms of the Lenni Lenape. This sukkah achieves fusion of two cultures from the past to continue an inveterate Jewish commandment in our 21st century American context.</image:caption>

Their building was built in 1954. Today, the building has an area of approximately 22,000 SF, with 350 family units, welcoming 750 congregants for high holidays.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The sanctuary design is deliberately welcoming, airy, and filled with light of the open countryside. The room seats 300 in just 7 rows, with remarkable intimacy. At the center, the Torahs are sheltered in a cylindrical Ark that is the heart of the building, forming the base for the 7 steel trusses that support the roof like the branches of a menorah or the tree of life.</image:caption>

The intention was to establish a natural setting, preserve 24 acres of protected wetlands, and to orchestrate the approach sequence through the trees and flowering meadow. Drawing inspiration from the walls of Jerusalem, yellow-gold bricks are laid in patterns that resemble the large cut stone and varied patterns of the ancient Temple’s Western Wall.</image:caption>

This was Sukkah Village Princeton, a community event that blended architecture and social action. Bringing attention to social issues impacting New Jersey and the nation, including homelessness, food insecurity, sustainability, affordable housing, and the struggles of refugees worldwide, high-profile architecture firms and two teams of student competition winners designed and erected eleven Sukkahs, representing traditional Judaic shelter, on public sites around downtown Princeton in September 2021. https://sukkahvillage.com/</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sinai Temple is a diverse congregation but is encountering aging members. In an effort to accommodate their congregation’s needs, Landau|Zinder worked to renovate and redesign the Sanctuary and Social Halls to meet current accessibility requirements as well as give the Temple worship spaces that meet the demands of a 21st century congregation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sinai Temple</image:title>

<image:caption>Landau|Zinder selected thoughtful and fitting materials for the worship spaces such as Jerusalem stone for the wall behind the Ark, Redgum wood veneer to resemble Rosewood for the new millwork pieces, along with complimentary carpets, vinyl flooring, wall coverings, and acoustic panels throughout. A new ceiling was also installed as a part of the Sanctuary renovation to hide the existing ductwork and provide acoustic solutions in their house of worship.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The original 3,500-SF sanctuary was barnlike with a wooden silo and an interior space with steps, tiered seating, and hard surfaces. These elements made the space inaccessible, acoustically challenged, and dark, despite its existing windows. Landau|Zinder prepared a Master Plan for reworking the public spaces, including varied conceptual design options and estimates. The decision was made that a complete remodeling (partial demolition and replacement) would be the most cost-effective way to resolve the multiple issues with the Sanctuary.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Scarsdale Synagogue</image:title>
<image:caption>The new Sanctuary provides a single-level floor with moveable seats, allowing for multi-minyan setup and for services to face east or south. The cedar panels that wrap the space were salvaged and reused from the original space, providing a continuity to the original space, allowing people feel connected to the new space as still their spiritual home. The curved south wall (Jerusalem Stone interior and fiber cement rainscreen exterior) was inserted to soften the space. The randomly sized window slots in the wall represent the 12 Tribes of Israel, each unique but providing their own light to the community. These windows and new LED lighting brighten the space, while new acoustic panels and concealed speakers modulate the acoustic requirements. New monitors and cameras provide technology to support the religious service needs of today. Landau|Zinder also designed a new Ark to house the Temple’s Torahs.</image:caption>
